Blackburn Logo Design: A Strong, Simple Mark
A logo is the heart of a company’s visual identity. It is the one element that appears on everything, and the one people remember. For Blackburn, a company based in Switzerland, we designed the logo and then built the complete corporate identity around it, from the first sketch to stationery, website and branded diaries.
Designing for a Swiss company
Switzerland has a strong design culture: clean, precise and reliable. Swiss clients expect a logo that is elegant and well made, with no unnecessary decoration. At the same time, Blackburn wanted its brand to communicate exclusivity and strength. The design had to balance both.
The concept: gold on dark
We chose a gold logo on a dark background. Gold communicates value and exclusivity; the dark background adds weight and solidity. The contrast also makes the logo easy to read at any size, from a business card to a sign.
The style is deliberately restrained. A strong logo does not need many elements; it needs the right ones.
A collaborative process
A logo cannot be designed in isolation. We worked closely with the client to understand:
- the history of the company and where it wants to go;
- its values and personality;
- its audience and how that audience chooses;
- its market and its competitors.
These answers guided every design choice, from the shape of the symbol to the typeface.
From sketch to final logo
1. Sketches and drafts
We explored several directions with sketches and early drafts, presenting the strongest options to the client.
2. Refinement
The chosen direction was refined in detail: proportions, spacing and the relationship between symbol and lettering.
3. Versions
We prepared the logo in colour, in one colour and in negative, so it works on any background and with any printing method.
Beyond the logo: a complete identity
Once the logo was approved, we applied it to every element the company uses:
- letterheads for letters, quotes and contracts
- business cards
- envelopes
- website design
- branded diaries and calendars
Each piece follows the same colours, typography and rules, so the company looks consistent whether a client receives a letter or visits the website.
Consistency builds a strong brand
The value of an identity grows with every contact. When the logo, the colours and the tone are always the same, people start to recognise the brand without reading the name. That is what makes a company memorable, and what makes customers trust it.
Flexible and practical
Every company is different, so we design identities that are adaptable. The same system has to work on a large sign and on a small social media icon, in full colour and in black and white. Testing the logo in all these situations before delivery avoids problems later.
Logo design at Donkey Lab
We have designed identities for clients in Switzerland, Italy and Spain, from small businesses to real estate agencies and industrial companies. Logo and identity design is part of our services, together with websites, print and visual content.
Common logo mistakes we help clients avoid
- Too many details. Fine lines and small elements disappear when the logo is printed small or embroidered.
- Following trends. A logo built on this year’s fashion looks old in two years.
- Only one version. Without a one-colour and a negative version, the logo fails on dark backgrounds, stamps and faxes of contracts.
- Unreadable typefaces. Decorative fonts may look elegant on screen and become illegible on a sign seen from the street.
- No rules. Without simple guidelines on colours and spacing, every supplier ends up using the logo differently.
A good logo is tested before it is delivered: small and large, in colour and in black and white, on paper and on screen. That is the difference between a nice drawing and a logo that works for years.
What makes a logo last
The best logos are simple, distinctive and appropriate for the business. Simple, so they are recognised in a fraction of a second. Distinctive, so they are not confused with competitors. Appropriate, so they say the right thing about the company. Blackburn’s gold-on-dark mark was designed with these three criteria in mind, so it can serve the company for many years without needing a redesign.
